Throughout my music education there have been times where my relationship with my instrument has been strained. It was very easy to lose affection for the music as it switched from a hobby to a career, in addition to the various negative environments that being a professional musician can create. It wasn’t until I left behind the idea of seeking a career as an orchestral performer and forging my own path with playing the horn alongside electronics. Golden Lines draws its name from the Japanese art of kintsugi, where broken pottery is rejoined with gold in the cracks to highlight the breakage, instead of hide it. This piece celebrates the unconventional and forging one’s own path.
