Program Note

Sylvania Suite is a short suite of pastoral miniatures originally written for my undergraduate woodwind quintet, The Pentawinds Woodwind Quintet.

Sunrise in the Valley depicts the sun rising over the horizon of a pastoral scene.

​

Mice in the Field is a light march imagining field mice darting across the landscape.

​

Water Lily Waltz imagines water lilies in a body of water as droplets create ripples in the water.

​

Deer at Dusk is a short hunting song depicting a group of deer darting along the forest in the evening.

​

Midnight Among the Stars is a meditative chaconne that acts as a musical form of stargazing and ends with the same opening "sunrise" gesture of the first movement.

This piece was written at two different points, the first three movements in 2019 and the last two movements in 2026.
